A Note From John

Hello!

Welcome to our newsletter, which aims to give tips, advice, help and information to those interested in the BMV Property Investing Market. Whether you are a past, present or future client, we hope to add a short burst of information, resources and energy to your inbox once a month. We really appreciate your feedback so do please keep it coming.

In light of the current economic climate and the UK property market in particular, understandably most investors are reviewing their position and many are questioning their involvement in property at all. I was coaching someone last week and in our feature article I will share with you why the call has troubled me since.

I hope you have had a good month since our last newsletter and are making sense of the marketplace and the opportunities it is presenting you with.

John

Feature Article

Do You Listen With Only Your Ears?

I don’t think its going too far to label any investor who has not reviewed their strategy of late a fool. The economy of the world is changing fast, the UK property market has slumped, and the credit crunch is biting nearly everyone. Surely it would be tantamount to madness not to take a fresh look at the forces that are driving a market place that you are operating in.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the review should be a negative one, as many seem to think. Here are 7 simple, but key, questions to ask yourself:

  1. Why am I doing this? Remind yourself and refocus on your end goal.

  2. Am I still clear on my strategy, and does it still meet my needs?

  3. Does my strategy still work effectively in the current climate or is there a better one?

  4. Can I make improvements to my marketing?

  5. Are there new opportunities in the current market place that meet my strategy?

  6. Have I reviewed my outgoings recently to ensure my cost base is still proportionate to my income?

  7. Are there new opportunities to diversify away from property that I should be taking advantage of?

Any of you that know me either personally or through reading my newsletters will know what stock I place in persevering at something and using the power or our minds. Perseverance is recognising that nothing worth having comes easy and most things in business are a numbers game, so you do have to stick at things to see results.

Mindset is all about the meaning we give to the ‘stuff’ that comes up for us every day.

These meanings dictate our emotional state, which in turn drives our behaviour and our behaviour, or actions, dictates our results. So changing the meaning we give to ‘stuff’ really is the key to mastering our mindset and triggering success in our lives.

But what about reality? Are we susceptible to living in a bubble of hope, perseverance and false positivity about the situation around us, and our ability to master it to our own ends?

I spend a large proportion of the time I am coaching working on mindset. Why? Because as I have said many times before, success is 90% mindset and only 10% technique and ability. Consequently I spend a lot of time working on issues like confidence, self-belief, procrastination, analysis paralysis, and limiting beliefs. Then there are practical issues like organisation, structure, time management, strategies and action plans and the like.

But what I don’t come across too often is the problem of someone persevering in difficult personal conditions, with a fantastic positive approach despite all the indicators screaming that the strategy is not working to meet their end goal. I had such a situation with someone I was coaching last week and to be honest it has really got to me.

I tried the subtle approach in leading the mentee to look at the indicators and the results and state for themselves what was happening. I even tried the (more natural for me LOL), blunt approach of stating the obvious in no uncertain terms. But if somebody does not want to hear what you are saying then they hear you with their ears only and not with their brain.

I knew I had not got through to my mentee and as the coach I have to take responsibility for that. I know only too well that if communication does not land properly then it's poorly delivered in the first place. But worse than that, it was clear that they thought I was a prophet of doom stealing their dreams. As someone who thrives on supporting people in the pursuit of their dreams, that has bothered me intensely since the call.

As you would expect, I have replayed the situation over and over to examine whether my message was the right one and how I could have delivered it more effectively. There is no doubt that the message was unequivocally the right one – I will learn and improve on the delivery side of things. But I mention this because you too may have mentors, peers, even friends giving you good information but delivered inadequately.

A brilliant example of that is my current fantastic progress at generating a residual income through the Utility Warehouse. Yet I know I am not alone in having originally been totally switched off to this amazing opportunity purely because of the way the message was delivered when we were all on Deep’s forum a couple of years back.

So are you listening to messages with just your ears or with your brain too?
